We recently bought a small cottage/rondawel on the Southcoast(Hibberdene). So December we headed down there for our annual migration out of gangsters paradise.

My son wanted to catch a shark so our first fishing day saw us at Orange Rocks. One rod had a large mackie slide on and the other one a whole chokka. About 30 min in the rod with the mackie on started screaming as something took off with it. I got my son on the rod but I had to help him from behind as whatever happened to pick up the mackie threatened to pull him off the rocks. I could feel what felt like head banging on the end of the line and was a bit puzzled, almost like a big cob but just harder. Other anglers pulled in there lines which was very sporting. Unfortunately during this process we got tangled with another anglers line. Our reel was loaded with .70 Awa-Shima Big Game so I was not too worried.

The water was still low which complicated matters even more as the only way to try and land it was to the right with not much water coming over the ledge on that side.

Too make a long story short the other angler was too our right and as we pulled the big boy over the ledge with a swell we managed to cut each other off, not before we saw it was a huge sandy. It is a pity we could not get him out and remove the hook but I am sure he will survive the ordeal. My son was chuffed with our first effort and he had aching arms for two days.

Our next visit there did not provide any pulls from anybody on the day.

Over the next few days we managed to catch some nice shad two of about 450mm and two woppers of 650mm.

Sad thing about the shad was that all four we caught where still full of eggs! So after these four we decided not to keep anymore shad but still had great fun catching and releasing them.

The trace we use incorporates a small trap hook for Karenteen. We caught more than enough to use as bait and released the rest.

Oops came out sideways!

One of these Karenteen would prove to be excellent bait for another monster I have an appointment with next time I am there!

Christmas day fell on spring tide with spring low being just after nine in the morning, so we set off to our mussel spot to get some fresh mussels for dinner.

We managed to go out one day for some off-shore fishing. We only launched at 07H00 and where back on the beach by 12H00 as the wind chased us off. We could not hook into any Dorados(there where quite a few boated this year) or tuna. We did a bit of bottom fishing and managed to land a few nice edibles.

Here is a nice Slinger and a False Englishman.

Eish sideways again! You can see I have not posted for a while!

Admin help!

During this short off-shore excursion I hooked one of the Karenteen whole on a 8/0 4x Bandit hook and sent it down 56m to the reef below. One crank up and bang! I got hit seriously hard by some monster! I was using a 37kg rated solid fiberglass rod, 200lb braid and 10 inch KP. I locked the handle with my right hand and laid back as far as possible to put maximum pressure on this beast. The rod doubled up(I have never bent a rod as hard as this before! The rod tip was actually coming past the reel). I was worried the rod was gonna snap, so I kept my face out the way! This Goliath was actually pulling my arse off the seat! As the rod tip bent passed the reel I held on for dear life. I had no options as releasing the handle would have been catastrophic on my right hand.

As the rod tip touched the water the pressure was too much and the bottom eye(closest to the reel) snapped the ring off with a bang! and shortly thereafter the trace parted at the hook! The resulting sudden release of pressure on this whole set-up almost had me doing a back flip off the other side of the boat!

I would love to know what that Giant was that smashed me up. Black musselcracker? Brindle perhaps?

Needless to say 250/9 Purglass bottom blank has been ordered and delivered and custom rod with super strong guides is in the making! Ek will daai prop van die see trek en hom innie oe kyk.

We scouted for some un-fished territory and walked to this spot 03H00 the one morning and fished there till about 10H00 without getting a decent pull. Some tiddlers kept us busy but nothing else. Was a long walk and afterwards I again realized I have and try and carry too much kit as we where lekka moeg after this excursion. It was still a wonderful outing as we where the only two at this beautiful place for the entire time we spent there.

Jeez, I spent my early childhood in Hibberdene, thanks for the memories! Spent many hours after school fishing the estuary under the bridges and off the he rocks the Sheppie side of the mouth. Haven't been back there for about 8 years, need to make a plan. Have you seen the video online of the bloke launching his boat from the estuary over the sandbank of the closed mouth and into the sea?
