At 11:55 the one barbel rod alarm goes crazy and the silence around that dam was broken. Vian and I both arrive at the rod in question at the same time. A quick scan by me confirms that it was the rod with the whole carp and therefore something big...I glance over to Vian and before I can ask him if he wants to take it, he jumps in front of me and picks up the Garrick custom rod built by Craig Neil and paired with the Shimano Ultegra 14000. The contact with the alarm wheel is broken but the barbel has still not stopped with its initial run. I explain to Vian to tighten up on the drag and reel down into the fish to set the 12/0 Eagle Claw circle. He does it perfectly and almost gets pulled from his feet with the direct braid set up – designed to go and target some Spotted Gulley sharks in Namibia next year.
