Saturday morning 05:00 I wake up and notice how much the dam’s level had risen by. I wake up my brother and my son and we get to work with a lot of enthusiasm for what this day might hold. I notice that many anglers around us have actually started packing up and I assume it’s because of all the rain. Vian got started on the “Barbel baits” and quickly started filling the keep net with some bite size carp. Dominique on the other hand was on a mission to taste success on specimen angling for Carp at Koppies and beyond my belief managed a couple of decent carp during the day on his all time favourite bait...Green Peas on the hair – with a parti blend of particles in the PVA mesh. I was only interested in the catfish and started loading different varieties of carp on the catfish set ups. One rod got a carp head, the other a fillet and then one rod got a whole carp which was strategically severed to release those all important attractive oils. These were taken in with the bait boat to distances between 80 m and 250 m from the bank. The water temperature was measured at about 22 degrees and the depth fished between 1.5 and 1.9 m on the distances measured. I was surprised at how shallow the water was and would have preferred 3 meters at least...but we had to make it happen. I joined in the fun of tempo angling for the carp and challenged Vian. We only managed carp and tried everything to get a different species caught – no muddies and no yellows however.
